FLOSS Weekly #23: Yahoo User Interface Library

FLOSS Weekly 23: The Yahoo User Interface Library:

Hosts: Randal Schwartz and Leo Laporte Guest: Nate Koechley, a Yahoo frontend engineer and designer who edits YUIBlog. The Yahoo User Interface Library, a collection of open source JavaScript utilities and controls with cross-browser, cross-platform support. Thanks to Cachefly for providing the bandwidth for this podcast, and Lullabot’s Jeff Robbins, web designe

I played with prototype and read about some other libraries. This one sound really worth a try for some reasons.

  • it’s modular, so I can just load the ajax component if I really need it (unlike prototype)
  • it’s well documented
  • it’s license let’s me use it even in closed source projects

Still there’s one thing in this episode that confuses me. Leo calls Randal the author of a brand new book called “Perls of Widsom”. I have the 2004 version of this book and I didn’t find any notice about an update at the publisher’s website. If Randal’s personal pages at stonehenge.com were accessible right now, I would have checked that too.

First, thanks for referencing the podcast.

    Second, yes, YUI rocks.

Third, Perls of Wisdom isn’t new. It’s just new to Leo. I don’t bother correcting him, because at least it’s a plug for the book. :)

Fourth, when precisely did you try to visit the website? I was down for an hour early thursday morning (west coast USA), but I had 112 continuous up days before that, and expect to be up again for quite a while.

First, you’re welcome, and thanks for the feedback.
Second, but refering to “Fourth”, I started writing this post and tried to access your site some minutes after that. After some minutes of trying I decided to publish with a notice of unavailability instead of waiting any longer, so the time of my post is quite precisely the time of the perceived unavailability of your site. Obviously, patience isn’t my strongest virtue. Sorry for that.
